Born half Aussie and half Yankee, he speaks with a grit Australian accent and wears a tattoo of the Detroit "D" on the back of his hand. He's got hoes in different area codes. This is Nastuzja Mess. A South African who was transplanted by the heavens to Coolangatta. She's 23, and friends with all the cool kids. "Oh yeah when Wardo and I used to date..." "Oh God, Jay Adams is texting me again...." "Oh one time backstage at a Mickey Avalon show..." "Oh when Slater and I climbed Everest...." The list goes on. We have a faux-marriage on facebook, but we take it pretty seriously. She works as a host at Neverland, and surely things get weird when shes around. She spends her days gurfing (girl-surfing) and smoking the gravity bong I gave her. Then proceeds to eat too much and pass out, upon waking up she likes to complaining that I did this to her. She's a track star, specializing in the run-like-youve-had-a-stroke 10 meter sprint and fall. She enjoys saying "sooo funny," "maddog," and "you dont even understand." Sunset at Snapper

This is a pretty standard sunset. Sunsets here are usually nothing short of beautiful. I forgot my camera at home, so I had to drive back and get it, so I didnt get any of the sun actually setting, but the sky has lots of color even without the it. From Snapper, you can see all the coastal towns from Kirra to Currumbin to Burleigh and all the way to Surfers Paradise.

Some pictures from my first few nights. My job is pretty much to drink and take pictures of other people drinking. Its not exactly what most people call "work." Neverland is small, but gets a lot of good bands and a lot of djs. The walls are covered with art that changes every month. Lots of skinny-jeaned, long-necklaced, weird hair-cutted hipster aussie guys and gals. I get a good bar tab every night, so the pictures start to go downhill around one or two in the morning. I just hope they dont figure out that I dont know what Im doing behind the lens.

Red Bull truck/portable DJ booth. This guy would set up on the beach after the contest and spin electronic while everyone was out in the water. It was neat.

The final day was good. Not great. The waves were pretty good earlier on, but shit out when the final started. The final heated up only at the end, with Taj coming out on top and Jordy coming in 2nd. As soon as the comp ended, the water was swarming with people trying to get a wave in at Snapper. It was really lame. Most of the pros hung around for another week, making Snapper all but impossible to surf. It was amazing seeing all of them freesurf, but even better to see the line up shrink when they left.

The Rainforest.

This is Nimbin. For those of you who do not know, Nimbin was established as a small hippy community in the 70's and has since kept the same community feeling and sense of freedom, along with the impetus to participate in public action and political reform. The town itself is full of beatnik types and lots and lots of dreadheads. The drugs laws, although there, are very very loosely enforced. The use of certain a herb is pretty much overlooked by all law enforcement. Therefore, you can go to any cafe or restaurant in town and enjoy a smoke along with your tea or meal. After visiting a few cafes, we drove about 25 minutes out of town to a waterfall nestled in the rainforest. Luck has it my camera starts to lose battery once we get there, so no real pictures of the waterfall or rainforest (except blurred shots). I left with a friend in my shoe/attached to my foot, I called him Mr. Leach. But, the ride there was full of some of the most beautiful landscapes I've seen to date. Rolling hills covered with fog and big expanses devoted to farms. Not to mention that around every corner there was a kangaroo on the side of the road. It was a great trip. We lost some brain cells, but gained some knowledge.

It rained the entire festival and by the time I left I was covered with mud, soaking wet, and had a ruined phone and camera, it was great, I had a blast. Big Fucking Crab

This is a mud crab. But dont let the name fool you, these things are better than blue crabs. I apologize to my people on the Eastern Shore, but they are. They taste like a mix of blue crab and lobster. This thing was about 7 inches across, 3 or 4 inches thick, and about 5 inches wide. It also weighed somewhere around 2 kilos. Mean bastard too. Mean, but delicious.

Waribee Open Range Zoo

This was an open range zoo in Melbourne. Meaning, all the animals were in these huge enclosures and the humans had to be kept in safari trucks or caged off areas. They had animals from different regions of the world separated and in what was supposed to be similar to their home habitat. The best part by far was the Australian animal enclosure. The little wallaby was the most friendly and the kangaroos we're kind of assholes. Like big, mean, misshaped deer that growled at you. The emus were cool, ugly as hell and smelled real bad, but really cool to see up close. We also saw a bandacoot. I didn't even think they were real, but the little critter crossed our path and was gone in an instant. Didn't manage to get a picture of him, but I did find some interesting roo-poo and emu-poo. Also, some pictures of my little aussie cuzzy, Tash, and myself playing around in the overpriced gift shop.
